8,000 Kilometers to Peace

Rotary members in a small town of Nova Scotia, Canada,

 took action to bring two families

 from war-torn Syria to their country,

 where the refugees are starting a new life.

World Polio Day is once again upon us,

 and it’s time to start thinking about the many ways

 we can get the story across to our supportive communities

. Last year there were something like 1,400 events

 organised by clubs in support of World Polio Day

 and more than 30 of those were in our region.

 It’s a good opportunity to sell the Polio message

 and maybe generate a few dollars to keep the

 end result squarely in the public’s eye.

Rotary Club of Bridgetown

President Jacqui Jones signs a cheque for a $100,000 donation

 to the Geegeelup Village Retirement Complex. 

The Club's  earlier commitment had shown Community support 

for the  application by Geegeelup Village Inc

 for funds to build an additional 16 units on the  existing Hostel.

 Government funding of $M 7.4 has been approved.

 The funds had been raised over many years

 by the Club's Blackwood Marathon Relay Committee 

and put aside to make possible such a major commitment.

 Rotary Club of Attadale President Colin McCulloch

 welcomed the Guest Speaker for the evening Grant Donald

 and many guests including Grant's Father Alex.

 Club member Rodney Rate had great pleasure in being Chairman

 for the evening and introducing Grant 

and speaking of all his accomplishments.

 Grant's topic was 'Actively Ageing'.
Grant provided everyone with a wonderful presentation

 of some of the work he has done in China providing Architectural Designs

 for Active Living for Ageing.

 Grant showed how the population in China is exploding.

 By 2050 there will be more than 330 million people aged over 65

 and 100 million aged over 80.

 Quite a challenge.

 Grant took us through the plans for Wanshou Park in Beijing.

 To say it is amazing is an understatement.
Grant's company Silk Tree International has created a beautiful park 

that caters for the physical and mental health for the elderly.

 They use the philosophy 

"We want the elderly to reclaim their lives and not be sedentary

 and dependent on others"

. In this way they want to reclaim parks for people 

who will most benefit from it.

 a winner at the Chamber of Commerce Business Award.

Learning about other cultures as a means of promoting peace

 and goodwill has always been an important feature of Rotary.

 This week we welcomed as guest speakers

 Prabhpreet Singh and Balli Singh from the Beetram Punjabi Club.

 These gentlemen are extending a warm invitation to ourselves

 and all other community members to attend 

the Punjabi Sports and Multicultural Event, 

to be held on Sunday 24 September at the Calista Oval

GLASSES collected in Wanneroo are changing the lives

 of underprivileged people in Myanmar.

Sinagra resident and Rotary Club of Wanneroo member Debbie Singh

 travels to Thailand a couple of times a year to deliver spectacles

 to those in need through a partnership with the Burma Children Medical Fund.

Glasses are donated via Specsavers Wanneroo

 and the club also distributes wheelchairs

 made by Wangara-based Wheelchairs for Kids.

“It’s just changing so many lives. 

There’s never enough,” she said.

Ms Singh travels to the fund’s clinic in the Mae Sot district, Thailand,

 which provides free health services for Burmese refugees,

 then crosses the border to Myanmar and visits remote villages 

with fellow volunteers to deliver the glasses and wheelchairs.

“It is a life changing moment for a person

 to receive the spectacles enabling them

 to read, write and work just to mention a few things,” she said.

This week we were joined by Marissa Verma 

from Bindi Bindi Dreaming

. Marissa is always a highly entertaining guest and a fantastic speaker 

- if you haven't yet heard her speak we highly encourage you

Marissa talked about the importance of Aboriginal language,

 some of the history and significance of languages

 and then taught us a number of names for people, animals and body parts,

 as well as greetings, in Noongar.
She even got the whole room up singing in Noongar

Barbara Freeman from the City of Cockburn spoke on reconciliation

 and how this has been established at Cockburn since 2011.

 Bringing cultural awareness to the community and developing partnerships

 between all in the community.

 The council has developed some literature that

 showcases places meaningful to Aboriginal people. 

Working towards having an Aboriginal Cultural Centre.
